General Rules

Registration

Registration ends on March 11 at 11:59pm. Register using the form above.

Each registrant must have access to a Nintendo 3DS and a copy of Pokémon Omega Ruby or Pokémon Alpha Sapphire. We also recommend that you have defeated the Elite Four in-game prior to participating.

Each registrant must also be a currently-enrolled student at UC Berkeley, or a UC Berkeley alum. Please contact us if this is an issue.

You do not need to choose your Pokémon yet. Just register as soon as possible if you want to participate.

We will send out a form to all participants asking you to register nine Pokémon: A team of six Pokémon, plus three backups. During the Frontier battles, you may use any of these nine Pokémon. If you participate in the final tournament, you will use the team of six.

Challenge Period

The challenge period lasts from April 2 through April 22. During this period, you may challenge any of the Frontier Brains to a battle.

If you are defeated by a Frontier Brain, you may not challenge him/her again until the following day.

We will hold special Dojo events each weekend, where you can challenge several Frontier Brains at once. This is the most efficient way to participate in battles! We will also hold various "office hours" during the week as needed.

Show up to a Dojo event to pick up your customized Trainer Card, as well as a lanyard. Upon defeating a Frontier Brain, you will earn a Frontier Symbol: a round button which may be affixed to your lanyard, backpack, or wherever else you see fit.

After battling a Frontier Brain, try not to spoil anything for the other challengers, such as the Pokémon that you battled against. This also means that fellow challengers should not spectate battles, or watch battle videos, unless they themselves have also battled the same Frontier Brain.

Final Tournament

Following the challenge period, participants who fulfill all of the following criteria may participate in the Final Tournament:

  • You have battled all eight Frontier Brains at least once.
  • You have earned at least six Frontier Symbols.

The final tournament will be held at some point during RRR week. You must use the first six Pokémon you registered.

We will offer prizes to the tournament participants and/or winners. More info TBD.

The final tournament will be 6v6 Singles format, with team preview.

Battle Rules

Team Rules

You will be asked to register a nine different Pokémon. No Pokémon/items may be used from the list below. This list is roughly equivalent to the Pokémon in Smogon's Uber and AG tiers, and contains Pokémon too powerful for standard use.

BANNED: Soul Dew (held item), Aegislash, Blaziken, Greninja, Landorus (Incarnate), Mega Gengar, Mega Kangaskhan, Mega Lucario, Mega Mawile, Mega Salamence, Arceus, Darkrai, Deoxys, Dialga, Genesect, Giratina, Groudon, Ho-Oh, Kyogre, Kyurem (White), Lugia, Mewtwo, Palkia, Rayquaza, Reshiram, Shaymin (Sky Forme), Xerneas, Yveltal, Zekrom

Battle Format

Lv. 50 set: Each player's Pokémon are set to Level 50. This is a temporary change to even the playing field; no Pokémon's moves or evolutions are changed.

Each Frontier Brain will have their own battle format and extra rules, to be announced after you register your Pokémon. You should prepare your team to handle a variety of situations.

Clauses

No Stalling Clause: As much as stalling is a valid strategy, we're all busy people. We request that you avoid using excessive stalling strategies.

Legitimacy Clause: All Pokémon, items, moves, etc. must be legally obtained (i.e. nothing from GameShark, PokeGen, etc.).

Evasion Clause: The moves Double Team and and Minimize are not permitted.

Soul Dew Clause: The item Soul Dew is not permitted.

Moody Clause: The ability Moody is not permitted.

Shadow Tag Clause: The ability Shadow Tag is not permitted.

OHKO Clause: The moves Fissure, Guillotine, Horn Drill, and Sheer Cold are not permitted.

Sleep Clause: If you put one of your opponent's Pokémon to sleep, you may not intentionally put another to sleep. Also, the move Dark Void is not allowed during Double and Triple battles. (We understand that this rule is somewhat subjective, so please use your best judgment.)

Species Clause: No more than two Pokémon with the same Natonal Pokédex number may be used on the same team.

Swagger Clause: The move Swagger is not permitted.

Baton Pass Clause: No more than one Pokémon on a battler's team may have the move Baton Pass. Furthermore, a Pokémon cannot have Baton Pass while also having a move that boosts Speed and a move that boosts another stat.

These clauses are similar but not identical to Smogon's OU clauses.
